Scott McTominay was denied a World Cup penalty against Morocco

Scotland couldn’t have asked for a better start to their 2026 World Cup campaign. Having had to wait since 1998 for an opportunity to compete on the grandest stage of them all, the side wasn’t going to waste their chance to showcase their skills, securing a 1-0 victory against Haiti.

Alas, they weren’t able to keep up their momentum in the second game. Within just two minutes, they were a goal down, and despite their best efforts, couldn’t level the score.

In the 81st minute, Scott McTominay burst into the box, where he was taken out by Neil El Aynaoui. After hitting the ground, the furious Scotsman looked up, desperately appealing for a penalty that wasn’t given.

Of course, fans were quick to head to social media to voice their opinions.

One said: “Honestly, the only word for the refereeing is diabolical, and even that doesn’t quite do it justice.” A second added: “Yeah, that was a penalty. He doesn’t win the ball, and takes out McTominay’s other leg.”

Another football enthusiast wrote: “Clear penalty. Scotland have been robbed there.”
