Erik Coleman intercepted Chad Johnson

After being drafted to the Jets in 2004, Erik Coleman quickly made an impact, becoming one of the team’s most important defenders.

With the pressure of the world on his shoulders, the American stepped up to the plate against the Cincinnati Bengals, getting the better of a legend of the sport.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Coleman reminisced: “Covering Chad Johnson was tough. He’s one of the best route runners in the history of the game. I got to play against him quite a bit growing up, in college, and in the NFL.

“In my first game in the NFL, he beat me for a touchdown, so I had to get him back. Later on in that game, I was covering him, and I got an interception, so I got the last laugh. Great player, fun to play against, big time talker, and he’s had a great career after his NFL career.”

Erik Coleman had beer cans launched at him during an NFL playoff game

During his time with the Jets, Coleman played in a plethora of intense match-ups, but perhaps none quite as heated as the time the Jets beat the San Diego Chargers back in 2005.

The 43-year-old enthused: “It was a crazy experience, my first time in the playoffs in the NFL. It was insane for me, because we had played San Diego in the regular season that year and it was a really nice experience, but when the playoffs came, the fans were throwing bottles at our bus, people were pouring beer, there were fights in the stands, it was a crazy atmosphere, but that just shows you how important it is when you get to that level, you’re fighting for every yard, you’re trying to get an advantage and make it to the Super Bowl.”
