FIFA 23 commentary team revealed, new in-game commentary options

With the release date of FIFA 23 edging ever closer, the English commentary team for the game has been revealed – and some new in-game options for players.

In the last two years, EA have completely refreshed the commentary team.

Players were previously used to hearing the voices of Martin Tyler and Alan Smith over the airwaves since FIFA 12. However, for FIFA 21, the long-serving duo were replaced by Derek Rae and Lee Dixon.

Dixon only spent one full game cycle in the co-commentary chair, with former West Ham midfielder Stewart Robson taking his place. Rae stayed in his chair for FIFA 22. The Scot has experience of commentating across Europe, bringing a unique insight into each major league as well as his inch-perfect pronunciation of player names.

For FIFA 22, meanwhile, Alex Scott was chosen to be a pitchside reporter. This is a role that Alan McInally used to fulfil in previous games. Scott was given more dialogue that McInally had, making it feel more like she is an authentic part of the coverage.

In addition, Scott became the first female English-speaking commentator ever included in a FIFA game. Speaking after the announcement of her inclusion in the game, the Arsenal and England legend said: “This is a big moment for FIFA, for football and women and girls across the world.

“Representation is crucial, and the inclusion of an English-speaking female commentator on FIFA is game-changing. The impact it will have is simply stratospheric.

“Whilst I am the first English-speaking female broadcaster to feature in FIFA, I will certainly not be the last. I know this is just the start of stronger female footballing representation from EA Sports and the football community as a whole.”

FIFA 23 commentary team, new options confirmed

For FIFA 23, Derek Rae and Stewart Robson are once again on English commentary. Alex Scott is still the pitchside reporter.

However, there is one notable change. Scott will join the commentary team this year, instead of just her role as pitchside reporter. In addition, she will also comment on several of the new cinematic scenes, alongside Rae, that will populate outside the ground before matches.

This is all part of an enhanced gameplay presentation system that will feature in FIFA 23. Furthermore, there are improvements in crowd visuals. Sounds from inside the stadium are also now more dynamic.

EA are also implementing changes to how you listen to the commentary. Like before, you can cycle through the in-game languages to hear different commentary voices during gameplay.

However, you can now turn commentary off altogether if you want to focus more on the game. Players can instead turn on EA Sports Trax, the in-game soundtrack, which will play during matches. This will mix in with the in-game sounds to still provide an immersive experience.

FIFA 23 releases worldwide on September 30. It will be available on all consoles, PC and Stadia.
