Gareth Barry opens up about making a goal-line clearance against Samuel Eto’o

In his debut for ‘The Toffees’, Gareth Barry had the monumental task of helping his side overcome Chelsea in a crunch collision. However, as he proved throughout his career, he was always willing to go above and beyond for his side. Therefore, when his goalkeeper made a major error, opening the window for Samuel Eto’o to pounce, he was the man who had to step up and get in the way of the ball.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, via Midnite, the legend explained: “That was the perfect start to my Everton career. I remember there was probably a few doubters, saying I was into my thirties now, and questioning whether I could still do it at Premier League level. Tim Howard did me a favour giving the ball away, and I produced a goal-line clearance from Samuel Eto’o. The Everton fans really bought into me after that game. That season was a phenomenal one for Everton, with the amount of points we got, just missing out on the Champions League.”

Everton ultimately won the match 1-0, giving Barry a much needed boost of momentum.
