Gary Neville calls out “weird” online Lionel Messi fans

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has questioned some of Lionel Messi’s passionate Twitter supporters.

The debate regarding who the GOAT is out of Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi is something we’ve all, as football fans, have had to deal with for many years now – and it doesn’t show any signs of slowing down.

The pair have already written their names into the record books but that isn’t likely to mean much until they’re officially retired from the beautiful game. We’ve seen them win trophies, produce individual moments of magic and drag their teammates to the top of the sport, and yet it still seems as if they’ve still got a whole lot more left to do.

Does Neville have a point?

One man who had a lot of interactions with one half of the argument, Ronaldo, is the aforementioned Gary Neville; and he had an interesting point to make regarding how invested supporters get when comparing the two.

“You can choose Messi, you can also choose Ronaldo. Neither opinion can be seen as wrong due to them both achieving greatness and the comparisons in stats so similar. What style of football you like can be the difference. However, I’ve got some weird Messi fans on my timeline!”

In order to lift one individual up you don’t need to knock another one down and in an era where footballers have more scrutiny and pressure on them than ever before, this is something a lot of social media users need to remember.
