Gary Neville slams Manchester United performance amid Ronaldo heroics

Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United for their performance despite their 3-2 victory against Tottenham Hotspur.

The two teams provided fans with an incredibly entertaining game to watch. The goal-fest kept supporters on the edge of their seats throughout the entire 90 minutes. But regardless, United’s performance still flattered to deceive.

They relied heavily on the heroics of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese icon kicked things off with an absolute screamer from outside the box to send the crowd into raptures. But it didn’t take Tottenham long to fire back.

Harry Kane levelled from the spot for the visitors, before Ronaldo gave United the lead heading into half-time. A beautifully delivered cross from Jadon Sancho landed at the forward’s feet, and he hammered the ball home to put his side back into the ascendency.

The Red Devils underwhelmed throughout the second half, and eventually, Spurs capitalised. Harry Maguire attempted to clear a cross and accidentally steered the ball into his own net.

However, the match wasn’t quite over yet. Ronaldo still had one last trick up his sleeve.

Following a corner, the Portuguese forward connected with an absolute bullet of a header to send the ball hurtling past a helpless Hugo Lloris. United fans were delighted with the impact of their star man, and relieved that they had escaped with three points. However, from a professional standpoint, Ralf Rangnick‘s men still have a lot to work on.

Gary Neville nails Manchester United

Although his former side temporarily reclaimed their place in the top four, Gary Neville wasn’t impressed with the overall performance. Although he watched in awe as Ronaldo bagged his first hattrick since his return to the Premier League, the ex-defender wasn’t entirely so complimentary about other areas.

He told Sky Sports: “It was a strange game at times in the second half. But obviously, Cristiano Ronaldo was absolutely sensational. What a response from last weekend’s poor display but also the situation with him where it looked like he was left out injured.

“They were not very good. I have to say that. The moments in the game were magical, and the fans are absolutely buzzing because they have seen Cristiano Ronaldo, and they feel like they’ve seen something special. But in terms of performance, if it is Spurs scoring that late goal, United fans will be going home saying: ‘How bad were we today?’

“But big moments happen, and the big player turned up, and ultimately that sends them home happy, but it wasn’t a great performance.”

Although the three points are crucial for United in the race for the Champions League, the squad still has a way to go to hit peak performance levels.
