Henry Cejudo reveals when a fight with Demetrious Johnson in Misfits Boxing needs to happen

Henry Cejudo thinks the Demetrious Johnson trilogy needs to happen as soon as possible

When Henry Cejudo challenged Demetrious Johnson for the UFC flyweight world championship back in 2018, he was given very little chance of upsetting the odds. After all, he’d lost the first via knockout in the opening round, and was going up against one of the pound-for-pound best on the planet.

But in a testament to his unrelenting powers of self-belief, he managed to produce a scintillating performance, claiming the victory via split decision.

And now, with the pair having won one fight apiece, Cejudo would love nothing more than to settle their rivalry in Misfits Boxing.

When asked, during an exclusive interview with Sporf, who his dream opponent in the promotion would be, the 39-year-old replied: “I think it would be Demetrious Johnson. If we could have our trilogy, we’d get paid a lot of money. I think he’d be the guy where I’d be like, ‘Let’s dance one last time — no wrestling, no MMA — a completely different sport.”

Cejudo then revealed what the key to victory was against Johnson and explained why it’s imperative that the clash with his old foe comes to fruition sooner rather than later.

The legend beamed: “Composure is so important, because he throws a lot at you; he’s super quick. He mixes everything very well; you can’t react to everything—if something hits you, it hits you. But he doesn’t have a lot of power in my opinion, although he’s super precise, especially when he got me with the knees in the first fight. I was never really worried about his hands. I think being in there with him for the first time, which only lasted for two minutes and 36 seconds, I was like, ‘I’ve seen enough to make it better; give me time’. Then, I obviously came back and got him. I think if we wait a little bit longer, that’s going to suck the fun out of it. He retired; I recently retired, and we’re both around the same age. I think it would be nice for us to have our trilogy.”

Long before he ever set foot in the cage, Cejudo dominated the sport of wrestling, picking up an Olympic gold medal.

During his stint on the US team, he spent plenty of time with Daniel Cormier.

And while the two-weight UFC champion concedes that his friend has an appetite, he insists that the superstar is still very much a fighter.

Cejudo laughed: “Daniel loved to eat. What you see with Daniel now, it’s who he is but more commercial, but he will pop off to you. He’s very athletic for his size.”
