‘He’s the Cheez-It Champion’… Joe Hendry talks epic feud with AJ Francis and how his Entrance song became a chart-topping success

EXCLUSIVE: Blessed with palpable charisma and remarkable powers of athleticism, Joe Hendry is making massive waves in TNA wrestling, with his entertaining AJ Francis rivalry and catchy entrance music.

Born and raised in Edinburgh, Scotland, the natural showman gravitated towards his beloved sport, going above and beyond to become a master in all aspects of the business. In a testament to his knowledge of exactly what it takes to make it in the industry, Hendry not only worked on his skills in the ring, but also honed his craft on the mic to solidify his place as one of the most engaging stars on the planet.

When the talented performer visited Arthur’s Seat in the Scottish capital with the idea of filming a wacky video to be played as he entered the ring, he knew wrestling fans would appreciate his efforts. But little did he know that his quirky idea would transcend the sport, becoming a top ten hit in both the UK and USA.

With outrageous clapping, a funny smile, a bird flying beside him and even a catchy chorus of ‘I believe in Joe Hendry’, the song that was once only known to wrestling fans has hit the airwaves in a big way, with music listeners around the globe left both transfixed and perplexed with this enigma of a hit.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Hendry laughed: “It’s been a lot of fun. It’s been incredible. I think professional wrestling is at its best when anything can happen. I feel like I’m in one of those moments right now.

“If you’d have told me a couple of months ago that I would have had a song at #4 in the big Top 40 in the UK, a song that was number one on iTunes in the UK, six in the US on iTunes, one in Malta, two in Ireland, it’s ridiculous. It’s just such a fun time to be a wrestler. It’s a fun time to be a professional wrestling fan.”

However, Hendry is far from a one-trick pony, with his songwriting prowess proving itself a handy skill once more during his fantastic rivalry with AJ Francis.

‘He’s the Cheez-It Champion’… Joe Hendry annihilates AJ Francis with an epic diss track

Gifted with incredible powers of creativity, the Scotsman is capable of breaking down his rivals through the medium of song. Sadly, however, nobody gave AJ Francis the memo.

When the ex-NFL player entered the ring, he didn’t expect Hendry to belt out: “AJ will never win the world title, the X division or the tag, but he’s the Cheez-It champion, the best they’ve ever had.”

Reminiscing on the hilarious segment, Hendry revealed: “I think what’s really cool was that it was just meant to be a one-off in-ring interaction. But the fans were entertained by what we were doing, so AJ has become one of the core roster members. And dare say, I think we had one of the most talked about feuds in TNA.”

Unsurprisingly, Francis was rendered furious by the incident. Consequently, in a testament to his ability to be the bigger person, Hendry decided to grab his guitar and deliver an in-ring apology. However, his way of atoning for his behaviour wasn’t exactly what his nemesis would’ve wanted.

Hendry sang: “Can you please get fired? Can we kick you out the door? Can you please get fired? Because it’s happened twice before.”

When asked how Francis took the insult, Hendry replied: “Horribly. AJ took that horribly, as he takes a lot of my insults horribly. But he is a professional. When he goes through the curtain, he does the job to the best of his ability. As someone in my position, you’re looking for people to work with, and AJ has certainly delivered on his part.”

Ultimately, the popular athlete’s journey has been nothing short of sensational. However, with Hendry and TNA successfully capturing lightning in a bottle, they don’t intend to lose their momentum anytime soon, with both the performer and the promotion beyond excited for what’s to come.
