How Manchester City could be punished after being found guilty of ‘almost all’ 115 Premier League charges

Manchester City have been found guilty of violating Premier League financial regulations on almost all of the 115 charges they were being investigated for. 

The Cityzens were primarily being investigated for a nine-year period spanning from 2009-2018, accused of breaching stringent top-flight financial policies designed to safeguard clubs, as well as ensure fair competition.

According to reports, sanctions against the Manchester club are yet to be determined, but City are expected to lodge an appeal. 

Speaking to The Athletic, a City spokesperson said: “The Premier League process remains ongoing, with significant elements to be completed, and subject to strict confidentiality. As such Manchester City FC’s position remains consistent with the club’s statement of February 2023.

“The club has diligently respected due process for eight years on the basis the Premier League board and executive would behave as an independent, impartial and fair minded regulator, free from partisan influence.”

During the extended time that City had allegedly breached competition rules, the Sky Blues went on to win four Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and three League Cups. 

The eight-time Premier League champions, who have won all eight titles since 2009, have been accused by the Premier League of failing to provide precise financial information, as well as details of payments to playing personnel and staff. In addition, there are alleged breaches of UEFA financial fair play (FFP) rules, and the top flight’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).

City have maintained their innocence since the news broke that they were under investigation, and had ultimately been charged of the reported breaches of regulations. 

What punishment could Manchester City face?

Since Sheikh Mansour took over in 2008, City’s domestic success has been unprecedented. Winning eight league titles, a Champions League, four FA Cups, seven League Cups, a Club World Cup, and four Community Shields. 

So what punishments could Manchester City face if the ruling is upheld? Several prospective punishments have been outlined in rule W.51 of the Premier League’s handbook, which range from points deductions, removal of titles, to even expulsion from the Premier League.
