Anton Ferdinand reminisces over Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano signing for West Ham
Anton Ferdinand was nothing short of stunned when Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano joined him at Upton Park.
Their arrival prompted him to work even harder to show the superstars just how talented he was.
After scoring on the pitch, Tevez would often go out to celebrate, with Ferdinand always aware of when the natural-born goal scorer had hit the town.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, he chuckled: “I think it was surreal watching Carlos Tevez and Javier Mascherano come into the building at West Ham. That was a crazy moment. It was like, ‘How have we got them’? It was amazing seeing how the level of training went up instantly. I wanted to show these guys how good of a player I was.
“They couldn’t speak a word of English. They had an interpreter, his name was Kieran, he was always with them. That epitomises the football club; Kieran became part of the family, even though he was only there to translate, he was embraced.
“I always knew when Carlos had been in the casino or been out at night. It was never through him, it was always from looking at Kieran, because he had matchsticks in his eyes, whereas Carlos looked right as rain.”
Anton Ferdinand kept Luis Suarez ‘quiet’ with the one defender he ‘knew was better’ than him
Tevez and Mascherano weren’t the only players who helped Ferdinand elevate his game.
At Sunderland, he joined forces with a defender he held in very high regard.
On one occasion, they produced a masterful performance to deal with a magnificent footballer.
Interestingly, Ferdinand said the pair kept Luis Suarez ‘quiet’.
