The pair of combat sports legends have developed a ferocious rivalry, with fans around the globe desperate to see the all-time greats finally settle their feud once and for all.

Alistair Overeem will fight Rico Verhoeven in boxing

In their careers, Rico Verhoeven and Alistair Overeem have cemented their statuses as two of the best kickboxers to have ever participated in the sport. However, despite this, their showdown will not take place within that discipline, but rather in boxing.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Overeem explained: “The update is that I want Rico Verhoeven. There’s the boxing angle, kickboxing angle and MMA angle. We’re going to give him the easiest route, which is boxing, because that’s what he’s doing now. In MMA, he has zero chance; in kickboxing he has little chance, and in boxing, he has the most chance. We’re going to give him that opportunity.”

And with such a massive amount of hype for the contest, Overeem has assured fans that it will go down in a fitting venue.

He enthused: “We’re thinking the Amsterdam Arena, 60,000-seater. This is the fight to make in the Netherlands. I’m very happy to be on this, to make my comeback and to fight Rico.”

In addition to kickboxing, Overeem had a tremendous career in mixed martial arts.

As well as winning the Strikeforce and DREAM heavyweight titles, the superstar also defeated an array of iconic UFC fighters.

However, there’s one victory in particular that tasted sweeter than all of the rest.

After developing a fierce rivalry inside the gym, Overeem knocked out a teammate.
