Inter fans destroy Lukaku mural amid his return to Chelsea

Inter Milan fans have defaced a mural of Romelu Lukaku ahead of his imminent return to Chelsea.

After many successful years in English football with the Blues, West Brom, Everton and Manchester United, Lukaku opted to make a change back in 2019 when he made the switch to Serie A with Inter Milan. During his two years there he quickly became one of their most essential first-team players and while many still don’t appreciate him to this day, nobody can deny the Belgian’s efficiency and power as a star forward.

The bitter end to Lukaku’s stay in Italy

Now, we appear to be just a matter of hours if not days away from it being confirmed that he’s decided to return to Chelsea for a fee believed to be around €115 million.

Many are happy to see him grace English football once again, whereas others feel as if he should stay and continue to assist Inter in their quest to become one of Europe’s elite sides once again.

One thing is for sure – Milan’s supporters have wasted no time in transforming him back from a hero to a villain.

As petty as defacing a mural may seem, this just goes to show how fragile the relationship between fans and players can be with regards to transfers and money. After all, we’ve all seen how quickly the Villa Park faithful have opted to turn their back on Jack Grealish following his £100 million move to Manchester City.

Some have accused Inter Milan’s owners of going too hard in the paint with cost-cutting measures with respect to the Lukaku sale, and if that proves to be the case, it probably won’t be long before the San Siro decides to redirect its anger.

Inter’s Serie A campaign begins on August 21 when they host Genoa.
