Former Premier League star Jermaine Pennant has been roasted after making a huge mistake when weighing in on PL defender debate.
The ex-Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur star was on talkSport to argue the toss about John Terry vs Virgil van Dijk, but later took the debate over to X.
That was just his first mistake…
Jermaine Pennant on John Terry vs Virgil van Dijk debate
It’s a debate that doesn’t have a clear answer and involves two of the finest defenders in Premier League history – who is better, John Terry or Virgil van Dijk.
For many people, the correct answer is Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic, to start with.
However, it’s the sort of debate that the talkSPORT crew love getting stuck into.
Earlier today (February 17) Jermaine Pennant was on to argue it out with Jamie O’Hara, and he chose the big Dutchman over the England stalwart.
He “confidently said: If I had a choice out of john Terry & Virgil I’m picking Virgil!”
Now, the answer to the debate isn’t really important, as both have their merits, but Pennant later went over to social media and lost the run of his argument.

Pennant got his facts mixed up
When questioned about John Terry’s vital contributions during Chelsea’s title-winning season of 2004-5, during which they conceded just 15 goals, Pennant really messed up.
A comment read: “Literally a massive part of Chelsea 15 goal conceded season he’s just a better defender end of.”
Pennant responded: “Having the best left back probably in the world, the best goalkeeper and and carvalho who was close to being on par with JT no it was a massive collective as well as Branislav Ivanović one of the best right backs also.
“C’mon now pls.”

OK, a lot of that argument is solid, right up until the end, where he mentions the Serbian Ivanovic.
That’s simply because the big Serb didn’t sign for Chelsea until 2008, and therefore wasn’t a part of the season.
In fact, he was playing for OFK Beograd in his homeland at the time.
As you might expect, Pennant didn’t get away with it.

“Ivanovic weren’t even in the team! This guy,” one said.
“Don’t think Ivanovic was at Chelsea bank in 2005 mate,” wrote another.
Others were quick to point out that Ashley Cole – presumably the ‘best left back probably in the world’ – wasn’t there either, as he didn’t sign until 2006.
There were other arguments, too.

One comment said: “Alisson was quite literally the best goalkeeper in the world. Plus Robertson was top 2 LB.”
“VVD would have the cigar out playing in that team,” said another.
Ultimately, opinions are like… you-know-whats, we’ve all got one.
However, if you are going to go out on a limb like this, it’s best to get the facts straight.
