Liverpool have been linked with two midfield targets as the transfer deadline looms nearer – and manager Jurgen Klopp hasn’t ruled out more signings.
A mere month from the end of last season, the Merseyside club were still in a position to secure one of the greatest achievements in football history. After picking up the League and FA Cups, they started their pursuit of the quadruple. However, despite their surging momentum, they couldn’t get the job done.
Manchester City pipped them to the post on the last day of the Premier League season. And, despite a valiant effort, they couldn’t prevent Real Madrid’s journey to the top of the European mountain. Therefore, many fans hoped that the side could dust off the dirt and return to the form that got them to the dance.
However, they’ve looked relatively poor so far. The Reds dropped points against Fulham and Crystal Palace and, surprisingly, lost to their rivals, Manchester United.
In a match which, on paper, pitted a bear against a wounded dear, the underdog came out on top.
While Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho deserved their credit for the goals, Liverpool simply couldn’t compete in the midfield area. Thus the rumours have started about potential players who could make a difference.
Liverpool transfer rumours
After their turbulent start to the campaign, Jurgen Klopp hasn’t ruled out making another signing. He explained: “It has to be the right player. If we are not convinced, we don’t do it.”
And according to the Liverpool Echo, he has got two players in mind.
The Frenkie de Jong saga has become the story of the transfer market. While Barcelona have desperately tried to unload him to relieve their wage bill, the Dutchman has clung on, desperate to stay at Barca.
But whilst new reports from Spain claim that De Jong is now willing to stay at the club, and accept a pay cut, the Reds have still been linked with securing his services this summer.
But regardless, Liverpool have prepared an offer for the playmaker who would undoubtedly fill a hole in the centre of the park.
In addition, the club also want Leandro Paredes. The Argentinian has not been a regular feature in the PSG starting XI in recent seasons, but has been a vital performer for his country. Paredes lifted the Copa America trophy last year.
Klopp will hope that the allure of Anfield could convince him to make a move to England.
