Netflix has confirmed that a biopic exploring the life of Roberto Baggio will soon hit the streaming platform.
Baggio: The Divine Ponytail, aka Il Divin Codino, is “coming soon” according to the official Netflix Italia account. The film will tell the story of Baggio’s remarkable rise to becoming one of the greatest footballers of all-time.
During his career Baggio won two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and one UEFA Cup, but his true legacy lies with the Italian national team.
One of the greats
On that hot July day at the Rose Bowl in the 1994 FIFA World Cup final, Italy lost 3-2 on penalties to Brazil after an incredibly tense affair.
The key penalty miss, as many know, came from Baggio himself.
As for the biopic, the official Netflix website has released the following description of the upcoming film.
“A chronicle of the 22-year career of soccer star Roberto Baggio, including his difficult debut as a player and his deep rifts with some of his coaches.”
Baggio is set to be played by Andrea Arcangeli with Andreina Fabbi playing the role of his wife, as per Esquire. The director, Letizia Lamartire, will be attempting to capture the essence of a man beloved by many across Italy.
The Italian hero
Some out there may not know a whole lot about the legend of Roberto Baggio when compared to the likes of Maradona and Pelé. If that’s the case, we’d highly recommend educating yourself as this is bound to be a must-watch.
Critics would prefer for his tenure in the game to be defined by that penalty miss in Pasadena. Instead, it feels like our time is best served reminiscing on what an outstanding and influential player he really was.
More importantly though, that ponytail is the stuff of absolute dreams.
Plus, this is the man who gave us the iconic Baggio’s Magical Kicks. As a result, he’ll always have our respect.
