New Barcelona signings Christensen and Kessie could leave for free after Saturday

Due to their complicated financial situation, Barcelona could lose Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie just a month after they signed.

It’s no secret that the Spanish giants have struggled in recent years. Due to their economic difficulties, they’ve tumbled down the footballing mountain. However, under Xavi, it looked like they were building their way back up. The footballing icon guided them on a thirteen-match unbeaten run which saw the side finish second in La Liga.

They’ve since used this momentum to go wild in the transfer window, signing Robert Lewandowski for £37.9 million and Raphinha for £50 million. On paper, this looks like spectacular business.

However, the Frenkie de Jong saga has left them in complete disarray. According to Marca, Barca have to pay Frenkie de Jong €88.5 million for the fixed salary and loyalty bonuses in his contract. Furthermore, they have €8 million to pay over a four-year period if he plays 60% of the games and a maximum of €12.8 million if he reaches the final of the Champions League.

With this considered, the club have desperately tried to offload him to Manchester United but De Jong won’t budge. Consequently, Barca are in a world of trouble as La Liga will not let them register any new signings until they reduce their financial outgoings.

Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie could leave Barcelona

Various sources have told ESPN that the two players could both leave the Nou Camp for free if they aren’t registered by Saturday due to a clause in their contracts.

This is because the pair of young talents initially joined the club on free transfers. This makes the build-up to Barca’s game against Rayo Vallecano very interesting.

Sources believe that it’s unlikely that such a situation will take place with the club confident that they will register all their signings. However, with the start of the season just days away, the pressure is mounting.

In the worst case, they predict that they’d have to talk to the players’ agents to try and find an agreement as they have until the end of August to register players.
