Ousmane Dembele transfer: The disagreement fuelling Barcelona exit

The transfer fee Barcelona paid for Ousmane Dembele now stands at a staggering €110million – and it could still rise. Sadly for the club and indeed the player, however, the transfer hasn’t really worked out.

The Frenchman possesses copious amounts of talent. But the footballer’s consistent injures have resulted in him struggling to find his feet at the Nou Camp. And when he has been fit, his ability hasn’t shown on the pitch.

It wasn’t long ago when it seemed a new deal between player and club was inevitable. Barcelona chairman, Joan Laporta, was singing the praises of the 24-year-old. The Spaniard even shocked fans by stating that Dembele is better than one of the world’s best players.

He claimed: “I am enthusiastic about Dembele. He is better than Mbappé.”

So despite the injury issues, it is surprising that the midfielder’s time at Barca seems to be coming to its conclusion.

Let’s take a look at what’s gone wrong:

Why does Ousmane Dembele want to leave?

Ousmane Dembele is currently requesting wage demands that the Spanish giants aren’t willing to meet. This has resulted in the French international looking elsewhere.

According to BILD’s Christian Falk, Bayern Munich have shown a degree of interest in the player. The German club would have the opportunity to sign a massive name on a free transfer. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that it would be a wise investment.

Fansided report that Bayern would need to offer Dembele substantial wages, as he is currently on a good contract with Barca. He could surely be worth such an investment should he be able to stay fit, but in all likelihood, if his track record is considered, he might not be able to do that.

What next for the Frenchman?

The 24-year-old is still very young in his career, and despite his struggles in recent times, his potential is evident – if he can stay fit.

Irrespective of whether Barcelona can match his wage demands or not, a move away from the Nou Camp could be the best thing for him.

A new challenge can sometimes bring the best out of a player. It can drive them to reach a whole new level. And that may be exactly what Dembele needs at the moment.
