Leeds defender Pascal Struijk has posted a heartfelt message to Harvey Elliott after the Liverpool midfielder suffered a horror injury.
The injury occurred during the Premier League clash between the two sides at Elland Road on Sunday, which Liverpool won 3-0.
Struijk went in for a challenge that ultimately resulted in Elliott suffering a serious ankle injury, with the 18-year-old seen to be in immense pain.
Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah was closest to the incident, and immediately waved on the Reds medical staff.
Struijk looked distraught on the pitch after the tackle and he was consoled by Leeds team-mates, as well as Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.
Struijk message to Elliott
The 22-year-old – who was sent off by referee Craig Pawson – has since posted a heartfelt message to Elliott, apologising for the tackle and wishing him a speedy recovery.
He wrote on Instagram: “In today’s game something happened that I would never wish on anyone.
“Harvey Elliott, my thoughts are with you. I’m gutted and never meant for this to happen.
“I wish you a speedy recovery and hope to see you back on the pitch soon.”
Elliott “overwhelmed” by support
Elliott was taken to hospital after the injury, and this morning thanked the football world for their support and messages on Instagram.
The midfielder wrote: “I’m of course absolutely devastated with what happened yesterday at Leeds, but have been totally overwhelmed by the love and support shown to me by the entire football world following the injury.
“Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out or sent messages to me and my family, it means so much to us. Also a massive thanks to everyone inside Elland Road for the reception you have me immediately after it happened.
“I am now fully focused on my recovery and will give everything in my rehabilitation to be back out there as soon as I can. I know I have an incredible support network behind me at Liverpool and together we will get through this.”
