Christopher McDonald, the actor who played the iconic character, Shooter McGavin, has discussed some potential plans for Happy Gilmore 2.
The original 1996 film is an old favourite, with fans often ranking it as one of Adam Sandler’s best.
In ‘Happy Gilmore’, Sandler plays a journeyman ice hockey player who can never quite catch a break. However, by pure luck, Gilmore discovers that he has the most powerful drive ever seen in golf.
After finding his new talent, Happy tries to win a golf tournament to raise money for his grandma to keep her home. During the film, a number of run-ins with his nemesis, golf star Shooter McGavin, make for some hilarious moments.
The sports-comedy classic earned a 61% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Despite its popularity, Adam Sandler has steered away from ever making a sequel to the beloved film. But, in 2021, the actor and comedian hinted at a change of heart.
Adam Sandler gives “greenlight” to sequel
During an interview with Golf Channel last year, Sandler gave his blessing for a ‘Happy Gilmore 2’. He did concede that plans were in the very early stages, although loved fans’ ideas of Gilmore and McGavin facing off on the Senior Tour.
“That [a sequel] has not been discussed, but it has certainly been discussed on the Internet,” said Sandler. “That Senior Tour idea, it would be so amazing.”
“Yes, you can greenlight a sequel. I don’t know if we can get it in writing.”
To many fans’ disappointment, any news of a second Happy Gilmore film has gone quiet. That is until Christopher McDonald, the actor who played Shooter McGavin, recently voiced his hopes for a sequel.
Shooter McGavin shares Happy Gilmore 2 vision
McDonald was excited at a potential Happy Gilmore 2 when asked about the prospect of a sequel. In an interview with PopCulture, ‘Shooter McGavin’ shared his idea for the next film’s plot.
“I would love to do it [the sequel],” said McDonald. “I think it has to be something sort of like a Ryder Cup. Yeah. Where the coach, the captain picks… We’re all good golfers, and the captain picks Gilmore.
“’Are you out of your mind? He’s a disgrace to the game!’ Then, of course, Gilmore, being called Happy Gilmore 2, makes the final putt that keeps the cup in America. That’s how it goes.
“The middle part, I don’t know yet. But oh my god, Shooter would go crazy if Gilmore was picked. Shooter is a serious golfer, and Gilmore’s like, ‘I’m just saving Grandma’s house.’”.
The thought of Gilmore and McGavin doing battle on the course once more is a dream scenario for everyone who has waited over 25 years for part two. Let’s hope that the studio makes it happen.
