Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the role he played in helping to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Manchester United.
The former United boss managed Ronaldo during his first stint at the club between 2003 and 2009.
Upon the signing, Ferguson called him “one of the most exciting young players I’ve ever seen”.
Ronaldo went on to play an important role for United over the following years. He established himself as one of the world’s top footballers in the process.
He left the club to join Real Madrid for a then world record fee of £80m. 12 years later, the Portuguese icon is back at the club where he made his name.
It was reported by The Athletic that “Ferguson [was] described by multiple sources as playing a “major role” over the 24 hours” before Ronaldo re-joined the club.
There had been rumours that Ronaldo was close to joining bitter rivals Manchester City. His agent, Jorge Mendes, had reportedly been in “direct contact” with City chiefs over a transfer from Juventus.
Now, Ferguson has spoken about his involvement in making the deal happen.
Ferguson on Ronaldo return
Speaking to Scandinavian outplay Viaplay (via Daily Star) after United’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle, he said: “I’m excited like everyone else, there was anticipation all day yesterday and waking up in the morning.
“I speak for all supporters – it’s a great day for Manchester United.
“A lot of people played their part [in bringing Ronaldo back] and I contributed knowing that really Cristiano wanted to come here, and that was important. It worked very well.
“I wouldn’t say it’s emotional, but it’s exciting for me and a relief because I couldn’t imagine him playing for Man City. I don’t think anyone could.”
Ferguson was in attendance at Old Trafford on Saturday as Ronaldo scored twice against Newcastle on his second debut for the club.
An hour after the full-time whistle went after the 4-1 win, fans could still be heard chanting the 36-year-old’s name in the stands.
United are next in action on Tuesday. They kick off their Champions League campaign in Switzerland against BSC Young Boys.
