Atletico Madrid forward Luis Suarez has hit out at former club Barcelona over his exit from the Spanish giants.
After six years of service he left the Nou Camp for fierce LaLiga rivals Atletico. Many still expected him to succeed, but even by his incredibly high standards, the 34-year-old is flourishing under Diego Simeone.
Suarez won four LaLigas, four Copa del Rey titles and one Champions League crown in a sensational run with Barca.
However, during a recent interview with France Football, the veteran noted that things didn’t end in an amicable manner.
“There are many different things in Barça. The team needed a lot of changes, and I accepted that. What bothered me was the way I left,” said Suarez.
“I think I deserved some respect in the way that they told me to leave. They told me they wouldn’t count on me anymore, so I decided to leave for Atlético to show them what I can still do.”
He has of course delivered on that promise, playing a starring role in guiding Madrid to the top of the LaLiga table this season.
“I would have understood their decision if I was not on the required level. My stats have always been good, and I was scoring more than 20 goals every season.”
“There are a number of current players in Barça who have not achieved what was expected of them,” he stated.
While some may call sour grapes on the whole situation, Barcelona’s very public troubles are a clear indication that things aren’t exactly running smoothly at the club.
Whatever happens next in the league, you can bet Barcelona vs Atletico is going to be a spicy affair in early May.
