Lille midfielder Renato Sanches could finally make his dream move to Barcelona following some recent developments at his current club.
The Spanish giants have long been linked with the 24-year-old. And now it seems they could secure the player’s signature that they have longed for.
Sanches caught the attention of Barcelona following his outstanding performances with his current side. The Portugal international rose to prominence during Euro 2016, in which he played his part in his side’s successful quest to lift the trophy. He signed for Bayern Munich before the tournament began, but struggled to live up to his star potential in Germany. The midfielder later had an unforgettable loan spell at Swansea.
However, since moving to Lille, he has gotten back on track.
The gifted player was vital in helping the French side win a historic Ligue 1 title last season. Sanches’ physicality, ability to pick a pass and confidence on the ball have helped him carve himself into one of the world’s best midfielders.
Barca looked likely to sign the Portuguese superstar last season, but a hamstring issue got in the way.
Sanches claimed in an interview with La Voix Des Sports that had it not been for injury, he would have left his current club last summer.
Lille are desperate to keep hold of their number one player. But following recent developments, that now seems unlikely.
Renato Sanches heading to Barcelona?
As per El Nacional, the player’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has contacted the Nou Camp side to let them know that Lille may have no choice but to sell.
Chairman Joan Laporta is reportedly aware that his transfer target could become available for less than €35 million.
However, the same report claims that Barcelona manager Xavi isn’t convinced that the midfielder is the solution to all their problems. He may have impressed in the French league, but he failed to set the world alight during his time in the Premier League and the Bundesliga.
However, Sanches is undoubtedly a better player since his move to France.
What would Sanches bring to Barca’s midfield?
It’s perhaps understandable as to why Xavi has his reservations. The talented footballer was only 19 years of age when he signed for Bayern Munich, and struggled to make an impact at the Allianz Arena. But he’s become a completely different player over the last few years. He’s now older, more experienced and has developed into the midfielder that his potential indicated he could become.

The dynamic player would slot perfectly into Barca’s midfield. His ability to play in every area of the centre of the park would prove of paramount importance for the Spanish giants.
They are currently in sixth place in the La Liga standings and need a breath of fresh air into their side. Sanches would certainly provide this. His ability to create moves and perform in big games is precisely what the financially struggling side need.
Due to issues deriving from a vastly-reduced salary cap, they might have to wait until the summer to make a move. But if Barcelona can bring Renato Sanches to the Nou Camp, then they will have picked up one of the most valued commodities in Europe in one of the best transfer deals in recent memory.
