Thiago Alcantara hit an absolute thunderbolt of a goal in Liverpool’s Champions League match against Porto last night.
The ball fell to the Spaniard, who smashed it home from way outside the box with laser-like precision. However, despite the incredible nature of the goal, which most players could only dream of scoring, Thiago claims it isn’t the best of his career.
Has Thiago really scored a better goal than that?
In his post-match interview with BT Sport, the midfielder was asked whether he’d ever scored a better goal. To the shock of his interviewer and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Thiago responded in the affirmative.
He said: “I think, yeah.”
This answer stunned viewers and pundits alike, who couldn’t imagine that it would even be possible to score a better goal than that.
However, there is one finish to which Thiago could be referring.
Thiago bagged another incredible goal in the dying seconds of a Bundesliga fixture against Stuttgart during the Spaniard’s spell at Bayern Munich.
A lofted cross rose into the box, and the midfielder lept into the air for what seemed like an eternity. He connected with the ball with an incredible velocity to smash it home into the bottom corner. The amazing bicycle kick has gone down as one of the all-time great Bundesliga finishes.
Thiago could retire tomorrow and be incredibly happy with the superb quality of goals that he’s scored throughout his career. But in his case, he’ll likely continue to score an array of dynamic and versatile finishes for many years to come.
Last night, his goal against Porto kept Liverpool’s impressive 100% win rate in the Champions League alive. The Reds have won every single game in Group B, which on paper looked to be a potential ‘Group of Death’ candidate.
