Manchester United have issued a statement condemning the vile abuse received by players on social media following last night’s defeat to Sheffield United.
Axel Tuanzebe was one of the players targeted with racist comments, leading to the young defender deleting his Twitter account and removing a post from Instagram.
It’s a stark reminder that racism is still very much an issue within the game and wider society in general.
United’s official statement reads:
“Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night’s game.
“We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.
“
