The showdown between Newcastle and Liverpool provided drama in abundance. After just four minutes, Anthony Elanga burst forward with the pace of a cheetah at full sprint, leaving several defenders in the dust before converting his effort with ease.
After an impressive first half for the home team, things quickly went astray at the start of the second segment, with Cody Gakpo scoring a magnificent equaliser.
However, rather than dampening their spirits, Newcastle used the swing in momentum as motivation to get back on top, with Joe Willock hitting the back of the net just two minutes later.
At this point, it looked like Newcastle were going to see the game out. Alas, in the dying embers of stoppage time, Lewis Hall fouled Víctor Muñoz, giving away a penalty.
Dominik Szoboszlai stepped up to the spot in the 99th minute with the weight of the world on his shoulders. But in a testament to his remarkable composure, he smashed the ball with maximum velocity to bag a point for his side.
Dominik Szoboszlai on how he held his nerve against Newcastle
In his post-match interview with Sky Sports, Szoboszlai was asked about how he managed to score the all-important penalty.
He replied: “To be honest, I didn’t even hear the whistle of the referee, so I had to look at him to see if I could go. I was practicing a lot in pre-season. I take the positivity of the game; it’s the first one of the season. We move on.”
When asked about how he handled the noise generated by the Newcastle fans, the Hungarian answered: “It’s different. 50,000 against me, you can’t hear your own voice. That’s why we love football.”
