Zhou Guanyu conscious after Silverstone horror crash, Alfa Romeo say no signs of fractures

Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu is conscious after being involved in a terrifying crash on lap one of the British Grand Prix, whilst his team say he has no signs of fractures.

The Chinese driver was involved in an incident with George Russell and Pierre Gasly before turn one at Silverstone. The impact with Russell’s Mercedes sent Zhou upside down, before he struck the barriers.

His car was then lifted over the barriers on impact, before hitting the catch fencing floor-first.

Russell immediately ran over to the barriers to check on Zhou’s wellbeing. FIA doctors then arrived at the scene and managed to extract Zhou from his car, which was trapped between the tyre barrier and the catch fencing.

Thankfully, the FIA released a statement shortly after the crash, confirming the Chinese driver is out of the car and conscious. Alex Albon, who was involved in another crash further back, is also conscious.

They wrote: “The FIA advises that following the incident at the start of the race, emergency crews were immediately in attendance, and the drivers of Car 23 (Albon) and Car 24 (Zhou) have been taken to the medical centre.

“Both drivers were conscious and will be evaluated at the medical centre. Further updates will be given in due course.”

Alfa Romeo then told Zhou’s team-mate, Valtteri Bottas, over team radio (as per Autosport): “Zhou is conscious, he is talking, there are no fractures. Considering the circumstances, he is pretty good.”

We will post more updates on both Zhou and Albon as they are revealed.
