BBC issue apology after Man United ‘are rubbish’ appears on news ticker

The BBC have issued an apology after their news ticker took an accidental dig at Man United during one of their morning broadcasts.

On May 22, United’s frustrating campaign culminated in defeat to Crystal Palace. The result marked their place as the sixth-best team in England, with 11 points separating them and the Champions League places. In the process, the Manchester club recorded their worst seasonal points tally in the Premier League era.

Regardless of who has ruled the roost from a managerial perspective, they have failed to perform. United players have looked demoralised as the campaign has gone on. In addition, they have only ever looked like sliding further into the abyss this season.

Diehard fans will hope and pray that Erik ten Hag has got the minerals to turn it all around. However, right now, he faces an uphill task, and opposition supporters have questioned whether he can succeed. And the BBC inadvertently deepened the blow for Man United fans on Tuesday morning.

BBC apologise to Man United fans

On a typical news broadcast, viewers can read a ticker along the bottom of the screen. It updates viewers on headlines while the main presenter talks through the stories of the day. But in a peculiar turn of events, the public were shocked to read ‘Manchester United are rubbish’ while they were updated on the French Open tennis.

After realising the error, the company addressed the issue two hours later and released an apology.

The on-air presenter said: “Just while we are on the subject of football, a little earlier, some of you may have noticed something pretty unusual on the ticker that runs along the bottom of the screen with news.

“It was making a comment about Manchester United, and I hope that Manchester United fans weren’t offended by it. Let me just explain what was happening.

“Behind the scenes, someone was training to learn how to use the ticker and to put the text on the ticker, so they were just writing random things, not in earnest, and that comment appeared.

“So apologies if you saw that and you were offended, and you are a fan of Manchester United. That was certainly a mistake and was not meant to appear on the screen.”

But despite their explanation, they couldn’t present a massive response on social media.
