EXCLUSIVE: A boxing legend is adamant that Chris Eubank Jr will never scale the sporting mountain and become a world champion.
The icon is convinced that the top guys in the division are simply too good for the all-action brawler.
George Groves says Chris Eubank Jr will not win a world title
On February 17, 2018, in the super middleweight semi-finals of the World Boxing Super Series, George Groves triumphed over Chris Eubank Jr in an incredible war of attrition.
For the majority of the fight, ‘St George’, who held the WBA title at that time, outboxed his rival, landing sweet right hands that reverberated around the Manchester Arena.
As the bout rolled on, the tide began to turn, with Groves sustaining a shoulder injury, forcing him to bite down on his gumshield to win the contest on points.
In the years since, Eubank Jr has continued to be involved in big events, picking up victories over James DeGale and Liam Smith. However, he’s yet to win a world title—a feat which Groves is convinced he’ll never reach.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf via betway, the 36-year-old, said: “No, no, no. Back then, he was a force. He was something you couldn’t sleep on. He had a bit of an aura around him, like they were trying to make him out to be a special fighter. I was concerned about that.
“I’d seen it before where even just the will of the people is something that’s quite difficult to overcome. His dad was getting very close with the organizers of the tournament, and through that, they were building Eubank Jr up even more.
“I was paranoid it was in their favour for Eubank to go through. He was earning less money than me, so he was a cheaper option. All this stuff was playing out at the time.
“Back then, he was good. What he lacked within his skill set, he made up for in tenacity, drive, energy, strength, fitness, and maybe a bit of desire. But I think after I beat him, he lost a lot of that.”
George Groves says Chris Eubank Jr is only interested in money fights
The British icon claimed: “He’s out there for a payday. The problem for him is that, because of Conor Benn testing positive for those drugs—which he’s been cleared of now or something—he spent two years doing nothing. Now he’s getting that Conor Benn fight, but that’s his legacy now.
“He’s never going to win a world title at middleweight. Janibek Alimkhanuly’s too good for him.
“All the top guys are too good for him. Even the top welters and light middleweights. Terence Crawford would beat Eubank.
“He’s not going to win a world title. No.”
