Dietmar Hamann says Florian Wirtz could leave Liverpool

Dietmar Hamann believes Florian Wirtz needs to get his act together as soon as possible or risk having to leave his current club.

When asked whether he thinks Andoni Iraola will have success in Merseyside, during an exclusive interview with Sporf, via Betinia, the German explained: “I don’t think too many things are going to change. Obviously, they’ve got the two centre-backs; Giovanni Leoni is coming back from a bad injury, and Jérémy Jacquet looks like a decent player, but I think his biggest task will be to get the best out of the players they bought last season because the reason they didn’t spend an awful lot this summer is because they pushed the boat out in last summer’s transfer window.

“If you look at the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, they just haven’t performed. Some of the guys have been in the Premier League, Kerkez and Isak, while Frimpong and Wirtz haven’t. You need time to adapt, but they’ve been there for 12 months now, and things haven’t really changed. The one who probably did fulfil expectations, Hugo Ekitike—I think he’s out for a number of months, which is a big shame.

“Is he going to get the best out of these guys? I’m not too sure. I think if they finish in the top four, they’ve done well. I’m not too sure they will, and they were very fortunate with the penalty against Newcastle, which I don’t think was a penalty. If you don’t start well, the paper talk will come very quickly.

“I think Jamie Carragher touched on it with Wirtz: if he doesn’t have a good start to the season, if he doesn’t play well up to the international break, I think there will be a lot of voices saying, ‘We’re not sure whether this is the right club for him’.”
