‘Ten police cars turned up’… Why a Liverpool legend got arrested after a night out with Jamie Carragher

EXCLUSIVE: Jamie Carragher had a wild night out in Japan, during which a Liverpool icon was taken to the police station.

Hours after falling short in the final of the Club World Cup on December 18, 2005, ‘The Reds’ headed out for an eventful evening in Yokohama.

During his time at Liverpool, Dietmar Hamann developed quite the friendship with Jamie Carragher. However, on one occasion, his teammate lead him astray.

During an exclusive interview with Sporf, via Betinia NJ, ‘Didi’ reminisced: “We got to the Club World Cup Final by winning the Champions League, and we played against Sao Paulo, where we ended up losing the game. With the time difference, we got back to the hotel, had a bite to eat, and Chelsea vs Arsenal was kicking off a couple of hours later, so we went down to the pub because Carragher had a few mates there.

“We had a few drinks, and at the end of the night, there was only one taxi. One of Carragher’s mates decided to run over the cab, and I think within a minute and a half, ten police cars turned up, and everybody went off their own way. I was never the quickest at the best of times, but I was carrying a knee injury, so I was the first one to get caught, and they took me to the police station. I tried to explain to them that I was part of the playing group that came to play the games, but they didn’t speak any English or German. It took me a while to tell them, but at about five or six, they let me go, and I made it to the hotel just in time, because a couple of hours later, we left – it was a close call.”

While Hamann had every right to be somewhat frustrated at Carragher for his brief spell in police custody, he might never have ended up at Anfield in the first place had the defender and Michael Owen not vouched for him to Gerard Houllier.

The German explained: “I had a decent season at Newcastle and both of them became very good friends. They told him, ‘Maybe you should have a look at that German lad at Newcastle’. Obviously, it’s much appreciated. They were fantastic footballers. It’s always good to hear that somebody thinks highly of you.”
