Graham Potter says Sweden were defensively poor against the Netherlands

Sweden couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2026 World Cup, demolishing Tunisia 5-1. However, the dream soon turned into a nightmare for the team managed by Graham Potter.

In a complete reverse of the game they played just a matter of days ago, they conceded a whopping five goals themselves, while only managing to hit the back of the net once.

Following the fixture, the manager explained that his side’s defense was the reason behind the defeat.

During his post-match interview, Potter explained: “Obviously really disappointed certainly with the result. It was a tricky one to analyse, I thought we did lots of good things in the game. We attacked and had opportunities, but defensively, you can’t concede that many and hope to win. We’ll learn a lot from the game.

“We’re playing against a good team. They hurt us in the wide areas. The first goal was from a long ball that we didn’t deal with very well. I thought we got off to not a great start and then came back into it in the second part of the first-half, I thought we were the better team. We started quite well in the second-half, but we lost the ball, and then all of a sudden, two more goals, and the game has got away from us. The boys kept going in fairness to them, but like I said, it’s one of those things we’ll learn a lot from.”
