Todd Hutchings opens up about how John Brzenk’s wife saved his life

After starting arm wrestling in his thirties, Todd Hutchings quickly exploded on the scene, showcasing remarkable talent. With so much ability, he decided to move to Utah to train with the great John Brzenk.

However, his first evening in ‘The Beehive State’ nearly ended in disaster.

In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Hutchings reminisced: “That was a crazy day. That was the night John’s wife saved my life. He picked me up from the airport, we went and had breakfast with Bob Brown, and then we went and saw another arm wrestling friend who was running a ranch, he had 100 horses, so we started drinking beer up there. Then, Bob Brown owns a bar, so we had some drinks there. Things got out of hand. It was cold, and I’d flown out there from South Carolina. I went and curled up in the back of my truck, and I’d have probably frozen to death if John’s wife hadn’t saved my life and found me.”

When asked how Brzenk’s wife reacted, the legend replied: “That was the first day I met her, so her reaction was probably less than ideal. I think when she went, ‘Todd are you in there’? I looked out of my truck and threw up all over the back of it.”

Thanks to Brzenk’s wife, Hutchings evaded his demise and has since carved out a remarkable legacy at the arm wrestling table. And he expects to write the next successful chapter of his story against Stoica, claiming he has more than enough to claim the victory over his rival.

The 60-year-old stated: “Bogdan has got three or four basis moves. He’s really good, but he’s new at this level, so he still makes beginner mistakes. He telegraphs what he’s going to do. Bogdan is really quick and has a really good hand. I think if somebody stops him and puts a lot of pressure on him, [they can beat him]. I think I’ll just stay calmer because I’ve been in those situations. I think my experience is my biggest advantage over his speed, hand size and height.”
