Man United tracking Dundee United goalkeeper ahead of transfer window

Man United have their eyes on Dundee United goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist ahead of a potential summer transfer swoop.

The Red Devils are reportedly looking to add a new shot-stopper to the squad. There are doubts over the future of Dean Henderson. United would need cover in the goalkeeping department if he was to leave the club.

Manchester United fans are unhappy with their current squad, especially following their recent 4-1 thrashing by neighbours Manchester City. Not to mention being knocked out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage by Atletico Madrid.

Some players are out of form, others haven’t shown the required quality, and numerous leaks have angered the fans. Whatever the root cause of the problem may be, supporters are unhappy with several top stars.

In fact, de Gea is one of the only Red Devils players who has been performing relatively consistently in recent weeks.

However, with replacement keeper Dean Henderson linked with a move away, Ralf Rangnick’s side are seemingly on the lookout for a new man between the sticks.

Newcastle’s Martin Dubravka rejected a switch to United in the January transfer window due to his disinterest in being de Gea’s backup. The swap deal would have seen Henderson go the other way.

With a big summer transfer window looming, the Red Devils look to have identified an opening target in Benjamin Siegrist.

Who is Man United transfer target Benjamin Siegrist?

As per the Daily Mirror, United are linked with a swoop for Siegrist. The 30-year-old Dundee United goalkeeper was born in Switzerland, and at 6’4, he is a daunting frame between the sticks.

Coming through the youth system at FC Basel, Siegrist spent the final three years of his youth career at Aston Villa. However, despite spending the following four years as a part of their senior team, he failed to make a single appearance.

Nonetheless, he still has valuable experience in the English leagues. Crucially, he would also qualify as a home-grown player.

David de Gea has had some very impressive appearances this season and has saved his side from dropping several points. He has also admitted that he does not see himself moving away from Manchester.

However, the Daily Mirror claim that United are hesitant to trigger an extension in de Gea’s contract that would see him stay for another 12 months after his current deal expires in 2024.

Should they land a suitable replacement, the extension may not be necessary.
