Pep Guardiola’s emotional Man City speech about divorce has fans all saying the same thing

Pep Guardiola is seen delivering an unusually personal team talk to his Manchester City players in The Beautiful Obsession, a four-part documentary following the manager and his side during the 2025/26 season.

During the emotional speech, following a 2-0 defeat to Juventus in the Champions League, Guardiola is in a reflective mood, drawing on his own experiences to challenge his players to bring the same intensity to football.

Guardiola’s emotional speech

“Guys, I want to confess something… I’m divorced from the most beautiful woman in your planet,” Guardiola tells the squad.

Referring to his former wife, Cristina Serra, whom he met when they were both 18. The pair went on to have three children and spent more than 35 years together, marrying in 2014.

Guardiola continues: “It’s my wife, my ex-wife. I love her unbelievably! But we lost the passion.”

“Why? For many reasons we lost the passion. I love her? Yeah absolutely. She loves me? Yeah. But we lost the passion.”

The Manchester City boss then uses his relationship as an example of what he expects from his players on the pitch.

“How do you play football? Because you play, or you have something inside? Where is the passion?” he asks.

“In your life, whatever you’re going to do, do it with passion. I don’t want good players! I want players with passion!”

Guardiola and Serra’s relationship began when they were teenagers, with the couple eventually building a family together while Guardiola developed his managerial career.

The couple announced their separation in January 2025 after more than three decades together.

However, Spanish property documents obtained by The Sun reportedly indicated that their separation had effectively begun much earlier.

Guardiola became the sole owner of the couple’s £8.5 million home in Barcelona’s Pedralbes neighbourhood on October 7, 2024.

A source told The Sun at the time: “Pep and Cristina had long been living separate lives.”

“She was unable to settle in Manchester and returned to Spain but they appeared, on the surface at least, to make it work.”

The source claimed Guardiola’s decision to extend his Manchester City contract was publicly viewed as a factor in the split, but suggested the couple had already begun going their separate ways.

“They were already starting to part ways before he put pen to paper on his new deal,” the source said.

Another source claimed the pair had been dividing their assets long before news of their separation became public.

Social media responds

The footage has prompted an emotional response online, with viewers focusing on Guardiola’s message about passion and the deeply personal story behind it.

One person wrote: “Wouldve died on that pitch if my manager said that.”

Another commented: “Pep picked passion over love. There’s never going to be another Pep Guardiola.”

A third simply added: “This is so emotional.”
