Ben Whittaker was paid more than £715,000 to fight Conor Wallace

With an opportunity to challenge Dmitry Bivol on the line, Ben Whittaker entered his IBF light heavyweight world championship final eliminator against Conor Wallace with the intention of making a major statement.

And he did just that—for nine rounds at least. The Englishman looked tremendous, utilising his superior skills and reflexes to pick his opponent apart.

The fight looked in the bag, with Whittaker expected to cruise through the final three rounds at a canter. However, in a shocking moment, Wallace cracked him in the tenth, leaving him on wobbly legs.

The Brit survived and received a telling off from Andy Lee in the corner. However, rather than listen to his coach, Whittaker walked straight back into the fire and almost got burned alive.

Alas, instead of extinguishing the flames, the slickster covered himself in oil in the final round, by continually refusing to take heed of his trainer’s instructions, absorbing massive punches which sent him flying across the ring.

Whittaker went down several times in the twelfth, all of which were controversially ruled as slips.

In a testament to his heart, he survived to hear the final bell, claiming the win.

While the victory left more questions than answers, his bank balance certainly benefited from the bout.

According to Sport Pays, he made a guaranteed purse of $750,000 (£567,730.2).

They added: “Capitalising on DAZN’s global broadcast exposure, and moving customised fight night apparel will generate an estimated $45,000 (£34063.81) through his designated signature merchandise percentages driven heavily by his viral social media following and massive homeline headline status.”

Furthermore, outside sponsors added an estimated $150,000 (£113,546.04)

Overall, Whittaker made approximately $945,000 (£715,340.05).

Who will Ben Whittaker fight next?

Whittaker is now firmly in line to fight the winner of Bivol and Callum Smith.

However, it doesn’t look like he’s quite ready for either of the world-level boxers.

Instead, with the first bout so dramatic, a rematch with Wallace is well and truly on the cards.
