Thibaut Courtois couldn’t contain his emotions as he was brought off against Spain.
Belgium conceded in the dying moments of the match, losing 2-1 and crashing out of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Thibaut Courtois was left devastated after being substituted
Spain vs Belgium was certainly an eventful game. Going into the fixture, the 2024 European Champions were undoubtedly the favourites, and they lived up to that moniker when they took the lead via a Fabian Ruiz goal.
However, throughout the tournament, Belgium have refused to lie down. The Europeans battled back against Senegal in the Round of 32 in a World Cup classic. Next up, Belgium mocked Donald Trump after sending the USA crashing out of the competition.
And tonight was no different, with Charles De Ketelaere finding the equaliser before half-time.
In the second 45 minutes, the underdogs had plenty of chances, and momentum seemed to be on their side. Alas, after making a save, Thibaut Courtois hit the ground, where he was attended to by medical staff.
While it initially seemed like he might play on, the Real Madrid goalkeeper was forced off the pitch, with the legend understandably weeping as he exited the field of play.
Fans were quick to notice, with one posting: “Thibaut Courtois is crying.”
‘Senne Lammens made one of the worst mistakes of the FIFA World Cup 2026
With Courtois off through a thigh injury, Senne Lammens had to replace him.
The Manchester United goalkeeper is a tremendous player.
Alas, tonight wasn’t his night.
In a horrifying moment, Lammens made a horrendous World Cup error.
