Senne Lammens made a mistake of the highest order against Spain in the quarter-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Belgium battled hard en route to losing 2-1 inside the Los Angeles Stadium in California, USA.
Senne Lammens made a huge mistake against Spain
Going into tonight, Spain were expected to bring Belgium’s fairytale run to an end in style. And the start of the game went according to the script, with Fabian Ruiz putting the favourites ahead after 30 minutes.
However, the underdogs weren’t going to lie down. In a testament to the fighting hearts of the players, moments before half-time, Charles De Ketelaere found the equaliser.
WOW: ‘Nasty blow to the face’… Belgium star left covered in blood during World Cup clash with Spain
Throughout the second segment, Belgium looked dangerous with several chances coming their way. Alas, in a moment that rendered the team devastated, an injured Thibaut Courtois had to come off the field.
In his place, Senne Lammens stepped in. And while the Manchester United shotstopper has talent in abundance, tonight was not his night. In the 88th minute, Lammens failed to contain an effort that he simply had to hold onto, allowing Mikel Merino to pounce once again to score the winner.
Of course, fans were quick to head to social media to react.
One posted: “Mikel Merino is the man for the big occasions. However, Senne Lammens has made a mess of that. Gut-wrenching moment for him.”
While another added: “We’re out of the World Cup because of Senne Lammens.”
A third posted: “Senne Lammens sometimes, man. How is he spilling that to an attacker?”
