Belgium has just produced an electric comeback against Senegal at the FIFA World Cup 2026, and it’s terrible news for the USA.
The European powerhouses gave the fans inside the Seattle Stadium in Seattle, USA, a match that they’ll remember for a very long time to come.
Belgium going to the Last 16 could spell disaster for the USA
Going into this evening’s game, Belgium hoped that, following a lacklustre group stage, they would burst into life and put on a big performance. While most of the golden generation have retired from the sport, the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku are still going strong.
Alas, from the opening whistle, the favourites didn’t look at the races. Early in the first half, Senegal failed to punish Belgium, missing an open net following a mistake from Thibaut Courtois.
While the worrying turn of events should’ve woken Belgium up, it didn’t, with Habib Diarra hitting the back of the net shortly after. Then, early in the second half, Ismaila Sarr doubled his side’s lead.
While Romelu Lukaku scored in the 86th minute, it still looked to be too little too late. But then, in a moment of magic, Youri Tielemans bagged the equaliser in the 89th to send the game to extra time.
While out of sorts, Belgium wouldn’t give up, with the team that has struggled to perform throughout the tournament earning a penalty, which Tielemans converted five minutes into stoppage time to send his team into the Last 16.
The electrifying turn of events could be horrific for the USA. Now rejuvenated, a Belgium side featuring De Bruyne, Lukaku and Tielemans is back in business and ready to carry their momentum into the next phase of the competition.
However, before Christian Pulisic’s side will face this enormous task, they must first overcome Bosnia and Herzegovina in their own Round of 32 showdown.
