Cristiano Ronaldo is out of the FIFA World Cup 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo went into the match with Spain this evening, knowing this could be his final ever appearance in the biggest competition in all of sport. Throughout his time representing his country, the Portuguese icon has produced many a spectacular moment, most notably helping guide his country to winning the 2016 European Championship.

However, at 41, his best days are undeniably in the rearview mirror. With pressure mounting, Ronaldo confirmed this is his last World Cup, meaning he simply couldn’t afford to lose. Alas, that’s exactly what happened.

Portugal held Spain off for 90 minutes, but in stoppage time, they switched off, allowing their opponents to strike.

After coming on late, Mikel Merino found himself in the perfect position. Ferran Torres picked out a magnificent pass that sliced through the Portuguese defence and found itself at the feet of the Arsenal man, who was left with a one-on-one.

Showcasing nerves of steel, he smashed the ball with his left foot, sending it flying into the back of the net.

For the remainder of stoppage time, Ronaldo and the rest of the Portuguese team did everything they could, but they failed to find the equaliser.

The full-time whistle blew, and one of the greatest careers in football history ended without a World Cup to its name.
