Lionel Messi makes FIFA World Cup history

In Argentina’s opening group stage match against Algeria, Lionel Messi made history by not just scoring his first ever FIFA World Cup hat-trick, but also equalling the competition’s goal-scoring record held by Miroslav Klose at 16.

Therefore, going into tonight’s showdown with Austria at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, USA, there was mountains of pressure on the gifted athlete’s shoulders.

WOW: PELE WAS BETTER THAN LIONEL MESSI AND CRISTIANO RONALDO ACCORDING TO A FOOTBALL LEGEND

This level of expectancy clearly weighed heavy on the legend, who badly missed a penalty in the ninth minute.

The shocking moment reminded everybody that Messi is human. However, despite the early adversity, the superstar quickly rebounded. Bursting into the box at an explosive pace, the 38-year-old met a perfectly delivered cross, sending the ball flying past the goalkeeper to score his history-making 17th FIFA World Cup goal.

The moment truly delighted the crowd, with cheers electrifying the stadium.
