Julio Encisco makes history for Paraguay

Going into the match this evening, Paraguay were massive underdogs. However, in a credit to their footballing IQ, the South American side produced an impressive tactical display, refusing to be broken down by the favourites.

Taking advantage of an out-of sorts Germany, Paraguay capitalised with a piece of play that fans will remember for a very long time to come. After being left completely unmarked, Julio Encisco put his head on a beautifully delivered cross, sending the ball flying past Manuel Neuer and into the back of the net.

The goal didn’t just put his side into the lead, but also made history.

During the BBC broadcast, Guy Mowbray explained: “Julio Encisco, he’s saluting the Paraguay fans who are saluting back. They have just scored their first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match. The only previous one they won was in 2010 on penalties against Japan, after a goalless draw. How they’ve done it? I don’t know, but they lead 1-0.”

Alan Shearer added: “We said it. That’s their hope. To get a set-piece, to get a corner, pick up the pieces and try and punish, and they’ve done that.”
