Following extra time, the two sides were tied at 1-1, resulting in a truly dramatic penalty shootout.

Kai Havertz stepped up first for the Germans, and opted for a stuttered run-up. Alas, his attempt to fool Orlando Gill failed, with the goalkeeper saving the effort.

In response, Mauricio tried the exact same thing, but unlike his rival, he samshed it home.

Reminding Paraguay that they weren’t done yet, Joshua Kimmich sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to put his country on the board. However, this did nothing to unsettle Gustavo Gómez, who effortlessly beat Manuel Neuer.

Next up, Jamal Musiala just about squeezed the ball into the back of the net for Germany. Then, Matías Galarza stepped up to the plate, keeping his team in front.

Shockingly, Nick Woltemade telegraphed his penalty, which Gill saved. With the pressure of the world on his shoulders, Antonio Sanabria missed to delay his country securing a place in the last 16.

To keep his nation in the shootout, Nadiem Amiri did exactly what was asked of him. At this point, it all came down to Fabián Balbuena, who didn’t deliver, giving Neuer an easy save.

With the momentum on his nation’s side, Jonathan Tah sent the ball hurtling over the bar to give Paraguay another shot. This time, there was no denying the South American side, with José Canale producing a magnificent penalty to book his team a spot in the next round, resulting in Germany going home and ruining their undefeated record in FIFA World Cup penalty shootouts.
