When is the Wimbledon men’s singles final? Novak Djokovic v Nick Kyrgios

When each final of Wimbledon takes place, there is always a special feeling – and the clash between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios will be no different.

Djokovic, the former world number one and 20-time Grand Slam winner, is the favourite. He is defending the title he won last year. He defeated Matteo Berrettini in four sets on Centre Court.

The Serb is a master when it comes to playing under pressure in the big tournaments. He has won Wimbledon six times. A victory on Centre Court against Kyrgios would take him one behind the overall record, held by Roger Federer.

Once part of the ‘big four’ of tennis – Federer, Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray – 35-year-old Djokovic is perhaps now the greatest tennis player that has ever played the game.

Whilst Murray has battled career-threatening injury problems, including a hip replacement, and Federer’s time in tennis has wound down, Djokovic is still on top of the world. Nadal, who has also dealt with growing injury problems in recent years, is the only one of the old guard that can consistently match the Serbian great.

In recent times, new young stars have risen to the fore. There is Germany’s Alexander Zverev, absent from Wimbledon due to injury.

Greece’s Stefanos Tsitipas has also impressed. Daniil Medvedev of Russia, meanwhile, was world number one before Wimbledon began. However, he has not played this year due to the ban on Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing at the All England Club.

Another player who is undoubtedly one of the most naturally gifted players in the game is Kyrgios. The controversial Australian commands as much attention for his on-court behaviour as he does for his skill level. A series of incidents involving umpires, fellow players and crowd members took the headlines in the tournament’s early rounds.

But on his day, the 27-year-old is world-class. He showed as much in round three, where, as the underdog, he ground down Tsitipas to win a five-set thriller. There is no doubt that Kyrgios can win Wimbledon. However, he will be up against a tennis genius standing on the other side of Centre Court.
