Uruguay forward Darwin Nunez has officially completed a move to Liverpool for a massive transfer fee. But where does he rank among the most expensive Premier League signings ever?
The Reds will fork out an initial €75 million (£64.2 million) for the Benfica attacker, per The Guardian. However, if Nunez meets add-on targets, the transfer total could rise to €100 million, which translates to £85 million.
Nunez underwent his medical earlier this week after agreeing to a five-year contract at the club.
Now that the deal is finalised, Darwin Nunez has become one of Liverpool’s most expensive transfers.
Liverpool’s transfer history
At just the initial fee, Nunez ranks third on the Merseyside club’s all-time most expensive signings. Ahead of him is Virgil van Dijk, who cost Liverpool £76 million from Southampton in 2018.
Second on the list is Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson. The Reds initially paid Roma £56 million for his services, which rose to £67 million with successful add-ons. In a similar scenario, Nunez will fly up to the top spot on the list if he fulfils add-on requirements.
Should Liverpool end up paying all the potential £85 million fee, the Uruguayan would rocket to the top spot on this list.
Nunez also sits high up on the most expensive Premier League signings list too. He is currently 12th, as per Transfermarkt, but could rise as high as fourth if all conditions are met.
The most expensive Premier League signing
At the top of the list is Jack Grealish.
Grealish became the first £100 million Premier League signing when Man City swiped the Englishman from Aston Villa in 2021. Grealish had a relatively underwhelming impact in his first season at the Etihad.
He registered just six goals and four assists in 39 appearances, whilst struggling to establish himself as a regular under Pep Guardiola. Despite this, the winger still enjoyed winning his first Premier League title with City.
The rest of the list
In the same 2021 summer transfer window, Chelsea paid Inter Milan £97.5 million for Romelu Lukaku. Sadly, Lukaku struggled to replicate his prolific nature at Stamford Bridge in a season blighted by injury and controversy.
The Belgian did score 15 goals in all competitions, but has consistently looked to get back to Inter. Recent reports have suggested that Lukaku may return to Italy on loan this summer.
Amazingly, Lukaku features on the most expensive Premier League signings list twice. His £90 million move from Everton to Man United sits fourth on highest fees. During his time at Old Trafford, the Belgian scored 42 goals in 96 appearances.
In third place is Paul Pogba. The Frenchman broke the world transfer record in 2016 when he swapped Juventus for Man United in a £93.2 million deal.
Obviously a hugely talented player who showed flashes of brilliance, critics would argue that Pogba did not live up to his billing as the world’s most expensive player. He is now leaving the Red Devils following the expiration of his contract. This means that United will yet again lose Pogba for nothing.
Now, Darwin Nunez will likely join this list. Liverpool fans hope he proves more successful than other pricey signings in Premier League history.
