Mexico is nothing short of brilliant when they play at the Azteca. However, on two occasions, they’ve fallen short.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 hosts are about to take on England in the Last 16.
Mexico have only lost to Honduras and Costa Rica in competitive matches at the Azteca
With 88,000 spectators capable of cramming into the venue, and standing at a crazy altitude of 7220 feet above sea level, the Azteca is one of the most intimidating grounds in all of football. And that’s not even taking Mexico’s record into account.
At their home ground, which opened in 1966, in competitive matches, the North American side has played 88 games, winning 70, drawing 17, and losing just two.
Mexico’s most recent defeat at the Azteca came back in 2013, when Honduras managed to come from behind to win 2-1 in a World Cup qualifier.

The only other loss occurred in 2001, where once again Mexico gave away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1, this time against Costa Rica.
In the 13 years since Mexico’s last defeat on home turf, they are unbeaten in 26 games. Throughout this current decade so far, they have scored 23 goals and only conceded four.
To showcase the extent of the task at hand for England, in World Cups, Mexico have gone unbeaten in eight, keeping ten clean sheets.
Including friendlies, Mexico have an overall record at the Azteca of 95 wins out of 145 matches, with 38 draws and 12 defeats. However, records do vary slightly here.
