The 2022 US Open takes place this week – but golf legend Tiger Woods is not playing at The Country Club.
Woods is arguably the greatest player to pick up a golf club. He has 82 wins on the PGA Tour – a joint record alongside Sam Snead.
He has 15 Major wins, with three of those wins coming at the US Open. His last win at the event was in 2008. Woods defeated Rocco Mediate by one stroke in a play-off. In a tournament where birdies were at a premium, the pair were the only two players to record a score under par.
After over a year out of action due to injuries suffered in a severe car crash, Woods made a triumphant return to golf in April. He competed in The Masters.
Despite expectations of the 45-year-old being relatively low going into the event, Woods managed to make the cut. He was in tied 10th place after 18 holes.
However, although the golf icon made a successful comeback, he is not playing in the US Open.
Why is Tiger Woods not playing in the US Open?
Tiger Woods announced his decision to withdraw from the field for the 2022 US Open last week.
He had already withdrawn from the US PGA Championship tournament after three rounds in May, after struggling with his physical condition. He then decided that he needed more time to rest ahead of The 150th Open at St. Andrew’s, which begins on July 14.
Announcing his withdrawal, Woods said: “I previously informed the USGA that I will not be competing in the US Open as my body needs more time to get stronger for major championship golf.
“I do hope and plan to be ready to play in Ireland at JP McManus Pro-AM, and at The Open next month. I’m excited to get back out there soon!”
Golf fans will be hoping that Woods is fully fit in time for St. Andrew’s and able to continue to build momentum from his solid performance at The Masters.
