EXCLUSIVE: Carlton Cole tried to dodge being on the same five-a-side team as a football superstar during West Ham training sessions.
During his time with ‘The Hammers’, the Englishman cemented himself as a club icon, with his famous song still echoing around the London Stadium to this day.
With so much love from the fans, Cole was selected to create his own beer last year, which he aptly named Claret and Brew. And with BrewDog and West Ham fans recently collaborating on a beverage, the icon jumped at the chance to get involved.
Carlton Cole says nobody wanted to play with Carlos Tevez in training
During his time at West Ham, Carlos Tevez set the Premier League alight, mesmerising fans with his remarkable eye for goal. However, while he was nothing short of fantastic under the lights, in the lead-up to games, his performances were hardly inspiring.
In an exclusive interview with Sporf, Carlton Cole chuckled: “Carlos was a pleasure to work and play with. On and off the field, he was a great guy. One thing I’ve got to say about him is that he was so good, he had an on-and-off button.
“A player like me, I had to be at it at training all the time with 100% effort, so when it comes to a matchday, I was on form. Some players can turn that button off, so they can be poor all week, and then on a Saturday, they can switch it on and be really good, doing overhead kicks, and winning games for the team, but they’re really low-key during the week and don’t train as hard.
“For me, Carlos had that on-and-off button. Sometimes, he’d come out for training, and his laces would be undone on his boots, and he’d just walk around. Nobody wanted him on our five-a-side or six-a-side teams because he never used to put in the effort. But on the Saturday, what a man, he exploded into a different person and won you games, so it was good to play with a character like that.”
Carlton Cole loves Boleyn Brew
West Ham and BrewDog have officially launched Boleyn Brew in an exciting collaboration, which sees one of the first Club beers ever made by fans.
Named in honour of the ground that holds such a special place in the heart of supporters, the beverage has gone down a storm, with Cole impressed by what the fans have managed to create.
He enthused: “Last season, I had a beer that came out. The club is heavily connected with BrewDog. Making my own beer was amazing because I didn’t know what went into making a beer or how it was done. We were one of the first club beers to be sold to the fans. They took to it and liked it to such an extent that they wanted to get involved.
“Now, I’m here to judge what they’ve produced. They came up with a great name: Boleyn Brew. It takes me back to the years of the Boleyn and what it means to the fans to have an input in something like this; it’s a really good thing. Everybody is on the same page and understands what it means to be a West Ham fan and to get this beer out there.”
