The fearsome derby lived up to all expectations, with the London sides delivering an epic encounter at the Den.

Usually, when a player gets a red card, his teammates and fans are furious. However, on this occasion, he received a raucous round of applause from the spectators and pats on the back from the rest of the West Ham squad.

The bizarre turn of events went down in the 89th minute.

Having battled back from 2-0 down to level the score, Kante, who’d scored one of the goals himself, was willing to do anything to prevent his side from missing out on the point they’d worked so hard to gain.

Therefore, when Kyrell Lisbie broke through on goal, the Frenchman felt like he had to act. With the Millwall star bursting forward, Kante tugged at his rival’s shirt, committing a blatant last-man foul.

The referee stormed over, producing the red card, which the West Ham player appeared to be expecting.

The away fans clapped loudly as the 20-year-old exited the pitch.

It turned out to be a genius move, as not only had Millwall missed out on a massive opportunity to score, but the resulting free kick came to absolutely nothing.

Fans were quick to react, with one writing: “The best red card I’ve ever seen. Proper take one for the team that.”

When can Mohamadou Kanté return to action?

Of course, Kante’s behaviour during the game has consequences.

The player faces an automatic one-match ban, meaning he will be unavailable for West Ham’s next fixture against QPR.

He can return to action to take on Lincoln City on October 14.
