On January 21, 2011, during an episode of Smackdown, Cody Rhodes suffered a broken nose when Rey Mysterio accidentally struck him in the face with an exposed knee brace during a 619.

In a testament to his wrestling intelligence, the American, who was referred to as ‘The Dashing One’ at the time, returned to action with a clear face mask, claiming he was disfigured.

This storyline culminated in Rhodes getting his revenge by pinning Mysterio at WrestleMania XXVII.

During an exclusive interview with Sporf, the 41-year-old reminisced: “A little inside baseball on that which was really nice. It was a moment in time when I was given a lot of freedom. I remember Michael Hayes was the head writer on Smackdown, and I was given a lot of latitude to create something on my own. Wrestling is always best when these organic moments happen, so my nose actually gets broken by Rey Mysterio, and then the idea of being disfigured when you’re not disfigured — the almost body dysmorphia and what it would do — it was just a really deep place to go early in my career.

“Then, you’re able to have fun with it and put paper bags on people’s heads. They would always get mad at me backstage because I wouldn’t put them on the ugly people, but that’s because I’m not going to seek somebody, and shove a bag on their head because that seems like assault vs the fans in the crowd who were like, ‘I want the bag’; it was a bit.

“But I tell Rey, and I don’t know if he believes me, I tell Dominik Mysterio, ‘Nothing happens in my career without Rey Mysterio wanting to wrestle me at WrestleMania in my hometown in Atlanta, Georgia, USA — everything stems from that’. In Clash of Clans, he’s a former Minion Prince. He’s a timeless character and somehow always involved in my life. The watch I’m wearing now, I got from a jeweller he recommended. My career doesn’t happen without him.”
