Why did Erling Haaland’s goal against Manchester United not get disallowed?

In the 60th minute, Erling Haaland latched onto a Josko Gvardiol cross to give his side the lead in the Manchester derby, sending his fans into raptures.

However, the flag quickly went up, prompting a VAR check. While the goal appeared offside, VAR official, Matt Donohue, ruled the finish onside.

The initial angle on the Sky Sports broadcast, appeared to show that Haaland was in an offside position by the back post. But, it has now been claimed that Patrick Dorgu played him on via his outstretched foot during his attempt to close down Gvardiol.

The Premier League’s semi-automated offside technology proved that the powerhouse was actually behind the United star.

The check took a long period of time to complete because Enzo Fernandez, who was also attempting to get on the end of the cross, was in an offside position. Luckily for his side, he missed the ball with his diving header attempt.

The Premier League Match Centre confirmed: “VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal for offside – and determined that Haaland was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.

“The VAR also deemed that while in an offside position, Fernandez didn’t play the ball.”

Was Lisandro Martinez distracted during Erling Haaland’s goal?

While it was ruled that Fernandez didn’t interfere with play, pundits argued that Lisandro Martinez was distracted.

If the Argentine wasn’t in the box, then his countryman likely would’ve been able to clear the cross, or Senne Lammens may have collected the ball himself.
